Instrmnt Design Studio

The Company

Instrmnt is a Glasgow-based, multi-disciplinary design studio focused on creating industrial-led products with an emphasis on quality, simplicity and affordability.

Their work has been recognised and exhibited by the V&A Museum, London Design Festival, Paris & New York Fashion Week and as part of Scotland’s Year of Innovation, Architecture and Design.

The Challenge

Cyberpac’s partnership with Instrmnt’s founders Pete Sunderland and Ross Baynham started at the beginning of their business journey. While still designing their debut product  ‘Instrmnt 01’, a minimalist steel watch inspired by the mid-20th-century industrial design, Ross and Pete contacted the Cyberpac team to come up with “packaging as aesthetically pleasing as the watch itself”. Challenge accepted!

Watch Packaging - Minimal & Tactile

Luxury ‘Kit Format’ Packaging

The layout of Instrmnt’s initial watch, “Instrmnt 01” was so the watch would arrive to the customer unassembled. Tools were provided so the individual could then build their own watch. The packaging needed to house each element of the watch safely, while reflecting the same luxury and minimal design as the item inside.

Based on a ‘kit format’, the individual components were simply laid out and push fitted into a die cut pale grey foam. The box itself was paper over a board box, covered in a light grey clay paper and simple white foil blocking on the lid and side, featuring the “Instrmnt” logo.

Creating an Icon

This layout has now become an iconic part of the brands identity and has earned Instrmnt wide acclaim from the likes of The New York Times, Dezeen, Wallpaper, High Snobiety and The Sunday Times amongst others.

As described by Instrmnt Director, Ross Baynham, “…your packaging has gone down amazingly – great work… everyone loves the box!”

Simply Beautiful

Stylish, minimal and functional

We love the simplicity of this project’s packaging designs; and since we started working with Instrmnt, our team have produced packaging for number of different products while the brand has grown exponentially. Aiming to always find packaging solutions that really mirror the aesthetics and functionality of the products inside, has been our shared ambition.

Watch this space

Cyberpac’s partnership with Instrmnt’s founders and design team is now 5 years strong. During this time we have worked on packaging for a number of different products. Most recently, we have created the first 100% recyclable clock box, using an unlined grey strawboard, outer and die cut card fitments all carefully designed to hold and display the box contents during transit. Our packaging partnership with Instrmnt is only just getting started…
